"In all of us there is a hunger, marrow-deep, to know our heritage-to know who we are and where we have come from. Without this enriching knowledge, there is a hollow yearning. No matter what our attainments in life, there is still a vacuum, an emptiness, and the most disquieting loneliness. "-Alex Haley
Why is it that the topic of family history only seems to surface when it's time to do a school project, church pedigree chart, or at a funeral of a loved one? Is it nothing more to us that a book of half correct pedigree charts and a box of unnamed photos?
How grateful I am, that the fire has been lit in my soul, to delve into the past and learn about my ancestors. They are no longer just names on pages, but real, unique, hard-working individuals who suffered, sacrificed, endured, and left lasting legacies for me and my family. I am eternally grateful for their examples, dedication, and especially, their journals that they left behind, so I may learn from them. When I get to the other side, and I see their bright faces, I will know them by name, and thank them for all that they taught me, even though we were generations apart.
“Whether we recognize it or not, we are connected with our past… people who care nothing for the past usually have no thought for the future and are selfish in the way they use the present.”-- President Spencer W. Kimball
