Howard Orson Spencer Family
Howard Orson Spencer
Howard Orson was the son of Orson and Catherine Cannon Curtis Spencer. He, with his sisters and brother, crossed the plains without his parents because his mother had died and his father was sent to England to be the editor of the Millennial Star.
When his father returned to Utah with a new wife, the family lived in the Muddy Valley, then moved to Orderville when Howard was young. Howard lived in Orderville during the United Order days.
Howard Orson married Louisa Lucy Catherine Cross Apr. 18, 1860 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah. He married Persis Ann Brown March 22, 1875 in the Endowment House in SLC, UT. He married Asenath Emmeline Carling Feb. 1, 1877 in St. George, Washington, Utah.
Howard died March 4, 1918 when he missed the bridge and fell off an embankment while walking home during the evening. He lived but a few hours afterwards.

Louisa Cross (wife #1)
Louisa was born to Frederick and Annie Marie Hughes Cross in Glanadda District, Bangor, Caernarfon, North Wales on Mar. 5, 1841.
Many people have called her Louisa Lucy Catherine Cross Spencer, but her birth record only shows her as Louisa Cross.
On Wednesday morning Sept. 4th 1850, she came with her parents across the ocean on the ship "North Atlantic" which sailed from Liverpool, England and arrived November 1. Her father died in St. Louis, Missouri. Her mother became a tailor to support them and to raise enough money to come across the plains.
Louisa married Howard Orson Spencer, 18 April 1860 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
She and Howard had 6 children. All except the first lived to adulthood. Their little girl, Annie Louisa Spencer, died when she was 2 years old.
Louisa Cross Spencer lived in Orderville, Utah for much of her life, taking care of her husband and children. One year, Louisa helped the women sneak molasses to make candy and cookies for Christmas gifts for the children of Orderville. None of the women minded that they had to go without sweets for a while.
Louisa died in Orderville and is buried there.

She was a real motherly, loving, carefree acting mother. How I can well remember how she suffered the hardships of life, that we children might rejoice with her and have what she could give us to rejoice over. Whenever anything went wrong she always had a song on her sweet lips to comfort us."
Aurelia Spencer (Petty), another daughter, wrote: "Mother was a very faithful woman, and liked by everybody. They used to say she kept her house better than anyone in town. She was so neat and clean and did very nice sewing and fancy work. She also loved to draw and paint."
